You can never be who you think you are.
But if you melt sometimes, you just might find who and what you really are.
Fundamental Questions
One of the most fascinating things about human life is that most people never really give it much thought.
On a daily basis an average person thinks about what they need to eat, what they need to drink, where they need to go and what they need to do once they get there. Along the way there’s always some consideration to how much effort it will take, and what they can get in return. And occasionally there’s always a few hours of contemplation on self-improvement and career goals.
Thus, an average person gets wrapped up in an “imaginary life.” But is that enough? When that’s all we’re doing, are we forgetting to think about why we were born in the first place?
There’s an even more fundamental question to ask. It’s a question that very few of us ever even think about.
“Who and what are we, and based on that, what should we be paying attention to?”
The Simple Answer
The simple answer is that we’re a fractal copy of divine awareness that’s returning to its source in heaven, but we’re out of touch with who and what we really are.
This answer leads to a deeper question:
“How do we go from a human perspective to a divine awareness?”
As adults, life and the process of going from a state of relative ignorance to divine enlightenment seems to be overly complex and confusing.
But it only seems complex because of our current “adult” state of mind.
From a negative perspective, some people think it’s impossible to go from here to there. Others think it’s just too hard to do. And most other people think that it’s too confusing to even think about it.
Many spiritual seekers just want someone to save them. They think that they just need to find a magical, lovable, guru/saint who can sprinkle some magic dust on a mantra or a prayer which will eventually take them to heaven. Or if all that fails the magical guru will fly into their soul at the moment of death and carry them into heaven. Unfortunately, that’s wishful thinking at best!
Human love is not the answer.
Likewise, magical priests, saints, and gurus are not the solution.
From a positive perspective, some spiritually minded seekers simply think that they can do it. They strongly believe that it just takes a little effort and a lot of love. At least one hundred different spiritually-minded seniors who followed a different path have bitterly complained to me that they had spent 2.5 to 5 hours meditating every day for several decades – without making any progress at all.
I gave all of them an “A+” for effort, but effort isn’t the answer.
THE REAL TRUTH DOESN’T REQUIRE ANY PERSPECTIVE, OR ANY OTHER PERSON, OR ANY EFFORT AT ALL!
THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE’RE TRYING TO BE SOMETHING WE’RE NOT, AND BECAUSE OF THAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO SOMETHING THAT CAN’T BE DONE BY AN IMAGINARY PERSON.
We used to know who and what we really are, but life became increasingly more complex as we grew older, and unfortunately, more thoughtful.
At birth everything was empty. Our mind was empty. Our thoughts were empty. Our emotions were empty. More importantly our perceptions of who and what we really are ……. were empty!
The Impossible Dream
Unfortunately, when we were born, our loving parents and our thoughtful teachers innocently misled us by pointing us in the wrong direction.
They decided to tell us and teach us how to become an imaginary person. And that, my friends, is an impossible dream.
The lies of self-perception began when we were infants.
Can you remember what your parents said, or what you said to your children?
The lies began as our loving parents said things like, “See him. See your Daddy. He sees you too. You can see your Daddy every time he’s here. See how big and strong and loving he is. You can also grow up to be big and strong. He can walk. You can learn to walk. He can talk. You can learn to talk. He can listen. You can learn to listen. See that color. That color is red. You will always see red when you see that color. Look at that cat. It has a long tail. It has whiskers. It has fur. It purrs. Can you hear it purr? Can you hear the tea pot whistle? You can learn to hear many different things. You can learn about what those things are from the sounds that they make. You will always be looking at a cat when you see something with fur, whiskers, and a long tail. You can also know what you’re looking at because you know what things are when you see them.”
Your mother might say, “See your Mommy. See how she does so many different things just for you. You can also learn how to do many different things. You can learn to do things for Mommy. See how your Mommy remembers everything that she sees you doing. You can remember things too. You can remember everything that you do. Pay attention to what you’re doing. Do the right things. Don’t do bad things. The things that I tell you to do are good things. The things that I tell you not to do are bad things. You’re good but you must do good things to continue to be a good person. If you do bad things, then you’re a bad person. Likewise, if you don’t do anything at all, you are also a bad person. You have to do good things in life. You were born to do good things and to become a good person – in the way that I have defined it!”
Or your father might say, “Remember to tell me when you’re hungry, or in pain. Remember that you can crawl. See your mommy walk. You can learn to walk. You have to try. Try now. It takes effort. I love it when you try. I love to see you walk. I love to watch you grow up. You should remember that everything that you do takes effort. Everything takes effort to succeed. If you’re trying to do something, it’s good. It’s good to always try to move forward in life. It’s always good to succeed when you try to do something. It’s always good to remember who you are.”
Our parents say these things because they love us, and because they want us to become just like them. They want us to live in this world. They want us to be in this world. They want us to succeed in this world. They want us to try to succeed, to try to remember and to try to become everything that we can become – in this world.
Waking Up from the Dream
But that’s not who or what we are. And it’s not the true nature of our experience. It’s an impossible dream about an imaginary person in an imaginary world.
When we’re dreaming, whether it’s at night or in the daytime, it’s always better to wake from a dream. Our clarity of awareness is always sharper and more expansive. We have more freedom and peace when we’re awakening.
You can never be who you think you are.
As a person, we’re always an imaginary dream about an imaginary person in an imaginary world – even though we “think” it’s real. Urban wisdom refers to this imaginary world as the “virtual matrix.”
But the key point is that you can never be who you think you are. Nor were you ever what you thought you were. Nor can you ever be who you want to become.
Your true self is not a form, a role, or any other type of self-perspective. Your true self is divine/celestial awareness. Being everywhere at the same time, it is not just somewhere. Your true celestial self is within you and everywhere else at the same time. Because it is always everywhere, it doesn’t need to go somewhere or be somewhere. Your true heavenly self is not hidden or hiding within you. Your true divine self doesn’t need to discover or attain anything at all. You don’t need to look for your true self or listen for your true self because you already are your true self.
Every time that we’re thinking - we’re in an illusionary dream. If we think we are, or if we think that we can do anything at all, we are simply just living within the lies that we tell ourselves – deep within the prisons of our minds.
Who and What we really are
Your true self isn’t even a self at all. It exists as a singularity of loving consciousness – within a divine eternal instant. It is constantly calling out to us from within the depths of our soul to get us to see who and what we really are. It is constantly encouraging us to let go of the lies of who we think we are - so that we can melt into ecstatic bliss and into the freedom of what we really are.
Our true nature is always free from the illusions of self-perception, desires, and emotions. It is always free from the illusions of thought, effort, sensations, and memories. It is always free from the artificial constructs of time, space, and duality.
Our true nature is always free from desires to be and from fears of non-being. Our true nature has no lies, or limits or veils of any kind whatsoever.
Your true soul, like the true creative aspect of divine awareness with you, is not a form and neither are you. We are not separate from the inner “guru.” There is no inner guru. The core of our soul, or clear awareness, is quite simply a fractal copy of divine awareness. We are already in union with heavenly/divine awareness.
True meditation does not take effort. The meditation of our soul (our inner clear awareness) is meditating for us constantly. True wisdom does not come from anywhere nor does it lead you anywhere. We cannot reach the eye center, or the crown chakra or heaven – for we are already there. We cannot love or learn to love because we are already in a state of divine love. We cannot wake up because we are already fully awake.
It seems like we’re making spiritual progress at times, but that’s only because we’re constantly melting out of one illusion after another. Eventually, there are no more illusions. Eventually we return to our original state of celestial awareness.
We are the loving consciousness that is the one divine consciousness. When we stop trying to be or to become anything else then we will realize that we have always been the one divine consciousness.
But if we think we are and therefore think that we should do something, then we might as well begin to question the true reality of who and what we are.
We might as well listen to the intuition in our soul that craves to return to its original nature. We might as well feel the gravitational pull of our inner divine nature - as it calls to us to let go of our illusions and to return to who and what we really are.
If we think we are, we might as well do our meditation – by letting our soul instinctively, effortlessly, and lovingly, become the entire meditation process. We might as well melt within divine love. Let the divine love, which is already within us, melt us gently and tenderly out of everything that we are not, so that it can finally melt us into divine awareness.
Great read, Greg. It is a breath of fresh air to see someone sees very much as I do. Truly, all we need do, is, Be without Being. And, you are correct, it seems too simple, so it is and many search and calculate forever and forever, they find a reason to recalculate and research once again.
I thought you might enjoy one of my earlier writings from several years ago.
Freedom Does Not Behave

Hi Greg. I dropped in to take a read. Interesting, the path of the searchers and how meditation is thought to be the portal to Divinity. I have a totally different take on the spiritual journey most attempt and some continually experience. I'll over simplify because I have a tendency to look for simple truths in complex things (an unfortunate part of my make-up). Anyway, the question really is, why are we on this earth in the first place? I don't believe it is trying to re-create pure, constant bliss in this place, because earth is such an imperfect environment, but rather it is to learn whatever lesson this life entails for our particular soul's continued growth. Our souls, you know, are constantly seeking refinement. I receive so much fascinating information from souls on the other side, including Ascended Masters and the Divine and all say the same things, basically. I think most people don't have the luxury of sitting in meditation most of the day when all we have to learn through that discipline is to keep our minds clear of 'noise' continually so we can live in this world with an open heart and be able to eventually connect with everyone at the soul level (just for an instant). That state also allows us to be be open to hearing the whispers. If we all existed like that, there would be more acceptance, less judgment, much more unconditional love and certainly forgiveness or at least understanding. Just about as ideal as we can make it around here now. I happen to live with one foot in this realm and the other foot on the "other side". That offers a fascinating perspective. Anyway, sorry I went on and on but I enjoyed your article even though our points of view are slightly different (we're human, aren't we? - ha). Loved meeting you, Greg. Hope we can stay connected.
